This year Ken Loach released his 50th feature film and the ICO re-released his first, Poor Cow (1967). Adapted from the novel by the excellent, underrated Nell Dunn, Loach’s debut feels as fresh, urgent, sad and hopeful as ever. I reviewed it for the August 2016 issue of Sight & Sound. I was also lucky enough to hear Dunn, one of my favourite writers, talk after the film was screened at the Barbican.
